Dear Pearl S. Buck

(Please read this with a good-spirited King James haughtiness....)

Dear Pearl S. Buck,

As I drove hither and thither on my daily commute...I was wooed and, actually, quite smote by the words of your fine work The Good Earth. How now, thought I with great consternation, could this novel have been skipped by me all of these years? I rebuke myself and my English teachers for this oversight.

Pardon my pretty petulance and impudent attitude toward other authors, but what novel could possibly follow yours? Am I just drawing a blank or merely being indolent? I believe that you have sundered my perspective - you harlot! I am not want to use such strong language ordinarily - but have been feeling peevish of late.

Perhaps I'll simply slake my hunger with sweet meats.

(haha, I crack myself up!)

Seriously....I LOVED this book. I did listen to it on cd and was entranced. The language was old skool and a large part of what I enjoyed. Pearl S. Buck is a literary rockstar...not to mention quite a pioneer in the world of international adoption. She established Welcome House, Inc., the first international, interracial adoption agency in 1949. She also adopted nine children with her second husband, Richard J. Walsh. Cool lady.

Check out the book if you haven't already.

Next cd-book in the car.....Bee Season.

That's a favorite of mine, too. I was never required to read it in school, but picked it up on my own a few summers ago and loved it so.

You crack me up! I just finished it two days ago and I thought the same thing...."How did I not read this before?" It seems truly impossible given the importance of the book, my interest in China and the fact that I love to read. Ms. Buck, Please accept my humble apology as well.

I don't know if there are several, but I know there's a Welcome House not too far from where we live.

I read it when it was an Oprah book of the month club pick and enjoyed it a lot. Check out Oprah.com book clubs to find our more about footbinding and other topics from the book.

This one is on my list! She also wrote a bunch more asian inspired novels that I had not heard of.

Love her expression of language.

Hmmm...slake my hunger with sweet meats. Forgive my feeble mind but that gave me flashbacks of manscaping. Sorry, can you tell I didn't sleep very long last night? I've gotten oddly goofy.

Love the love letter!
The Good Earth was required in my senior english class and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read it. That's been almost 20 years ago, so perhaps I need to re-read...

PSB Trivia: She's from my state!

I still haven't read it. I can remember where it sat on the shelf of my high school library, though. Isn't that strange?
I have to get it.

I couldn't agree more! After reading it I cursed every one of my high school and college english teachers for LEAVING IT OUT of the curriculum! How could they have missed such an amazing and beautiful and importand book? I feel in love with this book when I read it!
