Growth

Thank goodness for backyard gardens! Even though I freqently feel as though I am running to stand still - life really does go on. I love that I have a beautiful garden that reminds me of just this.

Here is a pic of the organic veggie garden a little over a month ago:

Here it is now:

We actually had our first Swiss Chard harvest! Take the ribs off and saute with some garlic & olive oil...Yumbalicious!

These guys in the corner? They are echinacea that seem to have naturalized quite nicely. It is their second year in the bed & I am so pleased by how robust they are!

So far, I've managed to keep the Ruby-Red flowering quince healthy and happy:

And, for the first time, I really think that my ferns are going to make it. It was touch and go last year (the second year they were in the ground) - but now they are looking quite healthy.

This one is an Autumn fern - it changes color going from autumn browns to fern green as it unfolds from its fiddlehead.

I can't remember what these things are called, but if you look closely, you will see these little bumps on the back of the fern leaf. According to my fern-loving sister, these are not heeby-jeeby inducing mites but little indications that the fern is healthy and reproductive. So, if you are in the market for a fern - don't shy away from these creepy-bumpy looking ones. They are the ones that you WANT!

Woo Hoo! I've found a fern-happy spot in my backyard. And, what that means is - yup - more ferns to come!

Here's to a healthy, fruitful, sweet weekend full of reminders that even when you may feel stagnant and not making progress - life does go on. Beautifully so, sometimes. (You know that I'm talking to myself here, right?)

Your garden looks fabulous. I'm thinking I need to plant a Meyer lemon in my backyard. My mom and my sister have those and the lemons are so juicy and sweet. I'd like to plant some other things, too, but I know Buffy will pull up almost anything I put in the ground. Ugh!

Great garden. I can't help but think of little feet traipsing through there and little fingers picking off all your lovely flowers.

I didn't know you could put ferns in the ground...
hmmmm

I have to share... we have our first garden ever
and it's doing quite well
since I buy bagged lettuce... already washed
we are leaving the lettuce in the ground to see what it morphs into.
It's amazing... it has like 3 heads right now.

It's coming along nicely! I've got some extra ferns if you need any more. You'll have to come and get them, of course ;-)

I looove ferns! I think it's a holdover from my 70s childhood when ferns were everywhere. You are doing a fabulous job with everything in your little patch of the world (plants and attitude included).

Must you post these? Have you seen my WEEDS?? What I'd give for even a measure, a small measure, of your wonderful green thumb.

Seriously. That's amazing and I could learn a lot from you.

I love it! I am so happy for people who can not only get a plant to live but make it thrive.

You pull off that thriving action very well!

OMG - I would never be able to have a garden like that. I can barely keep one flower plant alive outside! I am impressed!!

WOW! It's great how much your garden has grown already. The pictures are beautiful and I hope ours blooms as beautifully as yours has. Great job, you definitely have a green thumb.

Jonni

Beautiful, just beautiful. You are truly gifted. Me? Not so much. You would have cringed to see me pick the one miniscule strawberry from our "patch" yesterday and split it between the girls. It was so small they could barely taste it. They kind of smacked their lips and looked puzzled. So sad...

The garden is MAHvelous! You know me, I'm a sucker for growing things :) Nasturtium are my favorites this year, and yours are growing really big! BTW, I believe that those "bumps" on the underside of the fern leaf are the spores it will release in the fall for the little baby ferns to populate. They will most likely turn dark in the fall and if you rub them, they get all powdery. They look great btw!
